What will the weather be like?
Be prepared for muddy trekking and cold and wet weather. Depending on the fickle weather, and because its on the equator, east Africa may be wetter/muddier than other places you have trekked and climbed in. If you have ever climbed-trekked in Scotland for multiple weeks, then you will be familiar with what to expect. Make sure you have good waterproof footwear. It’s a good idea to bring extra plastic bags to put inside your boots over your socks (bring extra socks too) and extra waterproof storage bags to keep your equipment and clothing dry, as well as to put your muddy boots in. Make sure all of your clothing still keeps you warm when its wet. Good quality rain/wind proof outer shell pants and jacket are a must, as are polypropylene polar-fleece undergarments. I am still going to bring my lightweight and warm down jacket. It could snow on summit-day up high, so be ready for this too.
Also, be prepared for bright sunny, boiling hot, dry, desert weather in the lowlands. It could be scalding hot, dry and windy. Don’t forget cotton clothing, mosquito cream, suncream, sun hat, sun glasses, etc.
