Africa Itinerary

 

We offer the following Africa program for 1 August - 20 August and 11 January - 30 January Combined Mt. Kenya, Safari, and Kilimanjaro schedule.

Please note, those who choose only the Kili climb will not partake in the optional safari, they will spend an extra day acclimatizing however.

DETAILED ITINERARY Mt.Kenya and Kilimanjaro in
August (Sommer)

HELL’S GATE: Hiking Safari, climbing option (2 days)
MT KENYA: Sirimon-Chogori Route with climbing option
of Bation (7 days)
SAFARI: Amboselli (2 days)
KILIMANJARO: Umbwe Route (6 days)

Day 1:
Arrival to Nairobi, pick up from Jomo Kenyatta
International Airport and transfer to hotel of your
choice: ** Milimani Hotel ($70/double, $50/single)
***Boulevard Hotel ($100/double, $80/single)
**** Fairview Hotel ($130/double, $100/single)

Day 2:
This is a rest day in Nairobi. A day for resting
or/and exploration of Nairobi town. We will have a
welcome Dinner arranged so that the members of the
group get acquainted with each other.

Day 3:
We will have an early morning drive (2 hours) to Lake
Naivasha with large amounts of Falamingo, next to
which Hell’s Gate National Park is situated. We will
wander around the volcano formations of this park,
which its hot springs and non-predator wildlife. Upto
200m high cliffs offer opertunaties for rock climbing
and practice for Mt.Kenya.

Day 4: After early morning hiking or climbing we will
drive to Nainjuki at the base of Mt.Kenya -the
starting town for hiking the Sirimon route up
Mt.Kenya. Camping overnight near Old Moses (3000m).

Day 5:
We follow a slightly rising traverse, crossing
Ontulli stream to reach Mackinders valley. After about
four hours hike we reach our campsite near the
half-demolished Leki North Hut (3900m).

Day 6:
We continue up Mackinder’s Valley, leaving the stone
formation of Tereri and Sendeyo on our left. After we
pass Shipton’s caves we reach the Shipton Hut and our
campsite (4100m) at the base of the northern slopes of
Mount Kenya’s main peaks Bation (5199m) and Nelion
(5189m).


Day 7: Restday at Shipton’s Camp. Optional small hikes
to the surrounding hills or Icey Mike (an elefants
skeleton) or catch up on some climbing skills on the
near by cliffs.


Day 8: On this day we will hike around the main peaks
of the mountain past two Tarns. Over the Hausburgs Col
into the Hausburg valley and through Arthurs seat,
over the to Mackinder’s Hut in the Teleki Valley. We
will have a magnificent view of the rock faces of the
mountain.

route (day 1)


Day 9:
Very early in the morning the hikers group will hike
up to Point Lenana at 4950m (the highest hiking point
on the mountain). We will arrive the point at Sunrise
and walk back down stopping at Austrian Hut for
breakfast. We will later walk to “Minto’s hut” in
Chogoria Valley for the night.
Optional: Climbing Bation vis North Face Standard
route (day 2)

Day 10:
We will hike down the mountain using the Chogoria
track which provides magnificent views of the Nithi
gorge with the 300m vertical called ‘the temple’ and
Lake Michaelson below it as well as some waterfalls
and other lakes as Hall Tarns at 3600m. We end up at
Chogoria bandas from where we will drive to a near by
lodge for overnight.

Day 11:
An early morning drive to Amboseli National Park
located at the Kenian- Tanzanian border.We will drive
down to Namanga then over to the park. The park
enables us to see stunning views of Mt. Kilimanjaro
(in the mornings). We will also do an afternoon safari
at the park with a great chance of enjoying the
wildlife especially the big five. After a day of
safari we will camp overnight at the park.

Day 12:
Another early morning game drive through the park and
in the afternoon back to Namanga then into Tanzania.
We will drive to Moshi (a town at the base of Mt.
Kilimanjaro) where will have dinner and spend the
night in a hotel.

Day 13:
Immediately after breakfast we will drive about 15km
to Mt. Kilimanjaro National Park using the Umbwe Park
gate. We will then take the Umbwe route (remotely
used) to Umbwe cave. The first part of the hike is
through an old road followed by a deep tropical
rainforest leading to subtropical terrain and a cave
at 2900m height. We will then camp near the cave.

Day 14:
We will hike to Barranco Hut situated at 3950m. The
route we take leads eastwards down the valley where
all the glacier streams converge. It is also filled
with plenty of green vegetation and we get to see the
famous “Giant heather”. We will end the day at
barranco and spend the night.
Magnificent

Day 15:
We will walk to arrow glacier. The route to western
breach continues up the Umbwe ridge which becomes the
western lateral morraine of the barranco. The arrow
glacier is situated west of the little arrow glacier
at about 4800m. Here we will get to enjoy the
fascinating views of the Bridge wall.

Day 16:
On this day we will hike from the arrow glacier, up
the western bridge to the Mt. Kilimanjaro crater . We
will camp here for the night as we enjoy the
breathtaking sundown.

Day 17:
An easy and short hike to Uhuru peak (the highest
point of Africa).This gives the most amazing view of
the sunrise over the savanna grasslands. We will later
walk down to Mweka Hut.

Day 18:
We head back down to Mweka park gate using the Mweka
route. The route is not as scenic as Umbwe route but
it is easier but will lead us to the gate where we
will be picked up. We will then drive to Arusha town
and sleep over there.

Day 19:
We drive back to Kenia (Nairobi) on this day crossing
over the border at Namanga. In Nairobi we will spend
the night at Milimani Hotel.

Day 20:
Departure to respective destinations.

Mount Kenya Summit Trek and Rock Climb - 8 days

(trekkers and climbers welcome)

Located in Kenya.  This is a fabulous and moderate trek and optional rock climb, African style, on a high summit (5,199m) which is the second highest peak in Africa.  We begin our journey in the lush jungled lowlands where we can see wild animals and colourful birds and finish atop one of the world’s most spectacular icy giants.  Mount Kenya is off the beaten track of the regular tourist hordes, and we will have plenty of opportunity for pristine trekking and optional rock-climbing and exploration along the way. There is a superb high trek around the mountain, and the optional rock climbing to the summit (for experienced climbers) is one of the world's best.


Kilimanjaro Summit Trek - 7 days

Located in Tanzania.  An easy and beautiful trek to the top of the highest peak in all Africa!!  At 5,895 meters, this peak offers a rare opportunity to trek to the summit of an uncrowded, non-technical, easy route. Our leaders accompany you personally and are qualified British and American climbers and walkers, with more than 10 years of experience. Porters carry your rucksack and cooks prepare your food. Your fellow team members are adventurous women and men of all ages from around the world. We have chosen to ascend the route at a safe and slow pace, using all necessary high altitude safety equipment.  Choose from the following Kilimanjaro dates: 

 


Amboseli Safari

A wonderful rest between our two climbs and a rare opportunity to see these stunning grasslands abundant with wildlife in the shadow of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Located in Kenya, the Amboseli is famous for elephants, lions, and giraffes. The Amboseli is a wide open grassland, dotted with Acacia trees, with wonderful views of Mt. Kilimanjaro, and your expert driver will cover the park in your purpose-built land-rover. In the evening, you will camp under the beautiful Acacia trees.
